Den italienske journalist,
bladtegner og humorist
Giovannino Guareschi (1908-1968)
skabte karakteren Don Camillo
baseret på den historiske romersk
katolske præst Don Camillo Valota,
der var frihedskæmper under 2.
Verdenskrig og blev interneret i
koncentrationslejrene Dachau og
Mauthausen. Don Camillo er den ene
af de to hovedpersoner i Guareschis
romaner, den anden er den
kommunistiske borgmester Peppone.
Historierne foregår i hvad Guareschi
kalder "den lille verden", som
repræsenterer det landlige Italien
efter 2. Verdenskrig.
I perioden 1946-66 skrev Guareschi
347 historier om Don Camillo, en
karakter, der har betydet for
Italien, hvad Cervantes' Don Quixote
har betydet for Spanien - et
litterært mesterværk.
Don Camillos lille verden er feteret
i bøger, film, tv-serier, i radioen
og på YouTube.

created the
character Don Camillo, based on a
the historical Roman Catholic priest
Don Camillo Valota, a World War II
partisan and detainee of the
concentration camps of Dachau and
Mauthausen.
Don Camillo is one of two main protagonists
of Guareschi's novels, the other is the
communist mayor of the town, Peppone. The
stories are set in what Guareschi
refers to as "the small world" of rural
Italy after World War II.
Between 1946-66 Guareschi wrote 347 stories
featuring Don Camillo, a character who has
done for Italy what Cervantes' Don Quixote
did for Spain - a
literary masterpiece.
"The Little World of Don Camillo" has been
feted in books, in films, in series on TV,
on radio and on YouTube. |

Den katolske præst Don Camillo
(hvis fulde navn er Don Camillo Tarocci) er
en opfarende type og den lille bys åndelige
leder, og han er hele tiden på kant med den
kommunistiske borgmester Peppone
Imidlertid
er den fiktive by navngivet "Pontenara" i
Guareschis første Don Camillo historie fra
1946 udgivet i hans avis "Candido", men
navnet blev aldrig senere anvendt.
I 3., 4. og 5. Don Camillo film hedder byen
Brescello, der er den virkelig by,
hvor optagelserne fandt sted. I Brescello
"Don Camillos og Peppones by", beliggende
nær floden Po, er et museum for de to
karakterer.
Krucifikset som Don Camillo taler med er i
kirken Santa Maria Nascente i Brescello.
The Catholic priest Don
Camillo (full name Don Camillo Tarocci), is the
hotheaded priest and the spiritual leader of
the small town. He is constantly at odds with the communist mayor Peppone (full
name Giuseppe Bottazzi). Don Camillo is
closely linked to the crucifix in his
church, he speaks to it every day and Christ
in turn counsels his fiery priest in his
pastoral work.
The common interest of Don Camillo and
Peppone is the well-being of the small
unnamed town known as "a small world" in the
Po Valley in the heart of northern Italy.
However a fictive village named "Pontenara"
was mentioned in 1946 in the first Don
Camillo story Guareschi wrote for his
newspaper "Candido", but the name was never
used again.
In the films
3, 4 and 5 the name of the town is
Brescello, the real-life town where the
location shooting took place. In Brescello,
"the town of Don Camillo and Peppone",
located near the Po River, is a museum
dedicated to the two characters.
The crucifix which Don Camillo speaks to is
in the church of Santa Maria Nascente i
Brescello. |
