The Royal Palace (Palacio Real) is the official residence of HM King Felipe VI and HRH Queen Letizia, who use of it for official ceremonies. The history of the palace goes back to the 9th century, when the Emir of Toledo built a defensive fort on the site, later used by the kings of Castile. It was on this ancient fortress site that the Old Alcázar was constructed in the 16th century and was destroyed by fire on Christmas Eve 1734. Philip V commissioned the Italian architect Filippo Juvara (1678-1736) to design a new palace on the site. Juvara's sudden death meant that it was his colleague Giovanni Battista Sacchetti (1700-64) who continued his plans, simplifying the design to that of a closed square with an inner courtyard. The facade was based on drawings by Bernini for the Louvre in Paris. The facade is topped by a balustrade of white stone with statues of Spanish kings. The royal family resides normally in the Zarzuela Palace on the outskirts of Madrid.
Almudena katedralen (1883-1993)
Pave Johannes Paul 2. gav i 1991 ærkebispedømmet kirkeretlig forrang over de andre spanske stifter.
Opførelsen begyndte i 1883.

Almudena Cathedral, (the blue background images show the Crypt of Almudena), was begun in 1883, completed in 1993 and consecrated by Pope John Paul II. A statue of the pope in front of the cathedral was erected to celebrate this historic event. The diocese of Madrid was separated from that of Toledo in 1885 by Pope Leo XIII. Pope Paul VI gave in 1964 the diocese status of archdiocese and Pope John Paul II gave the archdiocese metropolitan status in 1991. The cathedral's architects were Marqués de Cubas, Fernando Chueca Goitía and Carlos Sidro. Its style is neoclassical and correspond in this with the Royal Palace opposite. The bright interior of the cathedral consists of an uncertain blend of styles, e.g. the stained glass windows are a fusion of Cubism and abstract figurative elements. The cathedral is situated where Madrid's first mosque was built and later a church was built there in honor of one of Madrid's patron saints, Santa María de la Almudena. The planning for a new church building began in the 16th century after King Philip II made Madrid the capital of Spain; however, the building activities were interrupted several times because of political disagreements and strong opposition from the powerful archbishops of Toledo. At long last the city of Madrid in 1868 got permisson from the archbishop of Toledo to built a new chruch consecrated to the Virgin of Almudena. Construction began in 1883. The crypt church was completed first. It houses the 16th century painting of the Virgin of Almudena. The building activities came to a standstill during the Civil War, and the process began again in 1944.
The Crown Prince of Spain and Letizia Ortiz were married in the cathedral, May 22, 2004.
